Brewing a Berliner Weiss by a Friend of BLC

image“Beer Loves Company? More like, ‘Everyone Loves Company.'” Yeah, yeah…we know a most of our posts lately have been guest posts, but other people have a lot of interesting stuff to say. Today, we give everyone a look at making a Berliner Weisse with digestive pills. See, we told you it was interesting. Enjoy!

The clerk at Wild by Nature didn’t even bat an eye at my response which was a sure sign she had no idea what I was talking about.  I decided to press on in the vain hope of trying to not seem like a nut, “There’s a particular strain of bacteria that was historically used in beer which I can only find in these digestive aid pills.”  She smiled politely, the way you do when finding yourself unexpectedly in a conversation with someone who has obvious issues, and then hoped it all works out for me.  In retrospect she was remarkably professional since I probably sounded like I was about to start cooking meth in my kitchen when I told her I was using the pills to brew a Berliner Weisse.

Da Da Da Dada Da Dada Da…

Rain fell at the 2013 Brewers East End Revival Brew-Off award ceremony. The day began sunny and with chaotic activity taking place in and around the location, a small American Legion Hall in Saint James, New York. As modest as the space and event were, lots of planning had been devoted to assuring this iteration of the annual event was well organized and run to the Beer Judge Certification Program standards. Additionally, steps were taken to include food, drink, fun and prizes for volunteers who would be sacrificing one of their Saturdays in May by helping to set up, pour beer and organize results. Through sheer lack of interest from other club members, Beer Loves Company’s very own Kevin ended up as the “Competition Coordinator” which meant by proxy Alicia was on the job too. Though trying, the day would prove enjoyable for us, A+K, as we saw homebrewers and attendees both discuss brewing and cheer each other on when awards were handed out to those who had crafted fine ales, lagers, ciders or meads.

“What is the best gift to get for a homebrewer?”

Well, the answer really depends on a lot of factors. Are they just getting into the craft or do they frequently show up to parties with kegs full of their latest creation? Homebrewing, like lots of other hobbies, can require tons of time, money and equipment and as people get deeper into it the investment only gets larger. However, as we have learned, it is a super rewarding pastime and there is nothing quite like pouring a pint that you spent hours creating. Brewers Profile of Alicia & Kevin (aka: A+K) by Jim Thoms

Alicia and Kevin joined B.E.E.R. just over 2 years ago and have become two of the most active members, organizing and participating in all sorts of club activities; truly the Dynamic Duo. Kevin was elected club VP last November. This is the first time I’ve profiled two member brewers at once.

JT: When did you start brewing?
A+K: The first time we ever brewed was a stovetop kit from Brooklyn Brew Shop. It was supposed to be some sort of IPA and though it didn’t really taste like one, it was still pretty enjoyable. They didn’t really list that we needed a straining/filtering device so that was a bit crazy and they also didn’t list at that time on the box that you needed a large pot. It was a full mash 1 gallon batch. It turned out lighter and fruitier than an IPA and with lots of natural carbonation. Weird experiment.
After attending a few meetings of both B.E.E.R. and L.I.B.M.E, we decided we wanted to try again on a bigger scale and brewed with Frank Filacchione. The first beer we brewed with Frank was a Rauchbier which was November or maybe December 2012 and was served at the 2013 RPAB Cask Fest. The beer ending up getting a little sour in the cask (perhaps a little lacto snuck in) but it tasted pretty good to us, or Kevin at least.
From there we went on to brew with a few other club members before finally purchasing some equipment and setting up our own garage mini brewery. It was through brewing with these other members that we learned the many different ways you can brew a beer. Our beers are still “not to style” though (screw the BJCP).
JT: That’s the longest answer I ever got to that question—and I’ve done 50 of these interviews in more than 13 years—but I love it!

Harvesting Barn Honey for Mead (Guest Post)

My wife leaned in up against me on the couch, her index finger flicking across the iPhone screen like a master dealer flicking out cards at a Vegas black jack table. Although I have to admit I’m pretty indifferent to just about anything sentimental, the tiny subjects of each picture she was showing me really did have an endearing quality to them. As a self-respecting man I would never use the word “cute” to describe anything but I imagine that is the word someone much more in touch with their feelings than me would describe them as. Their furry little jackets made them look like some sort of insect Vikings or Manowar album cover and the neon yellow sacks on their hind legs shone with a vivid intensity. “We have Bees”. My Wife’s announcement was less of a statement then A STATEMENT! I imagined this was the level of excitement associated with other brief statements like “I’m pregnant” or “I’m cured” or “We won”.
