Christmas is coming…

Happy Birthday America. Thanks for all the Beer.

with 56 comments

So chances are, at some point in your life you were a child who learned the song, “50 Nifty States” (ah, memories). Now maybe you even have a child of your own, in which case you probably could really use a beer today while we celebrate the birthday of our great nation, America. She gave us such wonders as the Dorito Taco, Double Down and who could forget Four Loko (a moment of silence please). Oh, and for a country that is still a child itself in the scheme of things, some pretty impressive craft beer is being cranked out in the good ole US of A. ::an eagle screeches majestically, fireworks explode and beers are popped in unison::

So, in honor of 4th of July, tell us what beer you feel best represents your home state. Let’s see if we can hit them all. Do it for America and all of it’s 50 Nifty United States (plus territories, we didn’t forget you Puerto Rico).

For Long Island, Alicia picks Port Jeff Porter while Kevin is going with Long Ireland ESB.

  1. Kansas- Buffalo Sweat from Tallgrass Brewing in Manhattan KS

Why? Because….buffaloes are the state animal and Kansans aren’t afraid to sweat. And the beer is great too.

  2. Ohio – “Burning River” from Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland, OH.

Ohio is the only state that is so self-deprecating it can create a beer named after one of its most embarrassing moments. Plus, it’s a standard bearer for Pale Ales.

  5. Nebraska- Cornstalker from Thunderhead brewery. Made in central Nebraska, where many people assume nothing exists, which is true for the state as a whole. This is an easy drinking, dark, flavorful wheat beer that you can buy from Chadron to Falls City.

  6. Fremont Summer Ale by Fremont Brewing

It’s deliciously refreshing, with notes of orange blossom and a light maltiness, and it gives just enough of a citrusy hop finish to appease all the hopheads up here in the PNW.

    Johnny

    4 Jul 14 at 7:09 pm

  44. For Wisconsin I would definitely have to go with Lakefront Brewery, Milwaukee. New Glarus might be a little more well known, but Lakefront is longer standing, and in my opinion produces better beer. They also offer a beer made from ingredients entirely indigenous to Wisconsin; you can’t really represent WI any better than that!

  45. Pennsylvania: Yuengling Lager.

It is not the most delicious beer. It is not the most crisp beer. It is not a lot of things.

It is, however, the best beer in its price point you will ever drink. It’s a beer you drink sitting around outside with family on a summer holiday. It’s the beer you drink after coming home from a shift at the plant. It is the beer you drink while watching the big game. In Pennsylvania, when you want a beer for an all around good time, you grab an all around good beer. You grab a Yuengling Lager.

    5 Jul 14 at 8:41 am

  55. I could name one of the many Schlafly or Boulevard products as the state beer, but let’s be honest. When you think of beer brewed in Missouri, it’s Budweiser.
