Harvest Ale – Founders Brewing Company (2012)

BLC Says:
Founders Brewing Company Harvest Ale is the Grand Rapids Michigan brewery’s foray into wet-hopped ales. This well respected brewery has put it’s best foot forward with this limited release brew. Harvest Ale is released annually in Mid-October with a party at the brewery and sent out to distributors just a week later. We were able to get our hands on a 4 pack of 12 ounce bottles from a local bottle shop. It is a crisp, light to medium body brew which looks great in the glass sporting a foamy, rocky white head and a hazy golden-yellow body. There is nice, plentiful lacing and mild carbonation is clearly visible. A lively aroma is to be expected from this style and Harvest Ale delivers. When bringing up the glass notes of citrus, fruit and mild but firm backing malts greet the taster. Lemon and berry-like flavors are present and the hop aroma is a tad on the piney, bitter side. Each note seems to layer nicely with the others. The taste follows the aroma adding a medium amount of bitterness, nice mild carbonation and is a true showcase for the wet hops. The finish is semi-dry and bitter while the aftertaste echoes the citrus and fruit flavors with faint malt refrains. Harvest Ale leaves a lingering aftertaste on your palate which pushes you back to the glass for more.

What Alicia Thinks:
I personally am not a huge fan of this, but I do see how it could be appealing to people who are more into hoppy beers. For me, there was not enough dimension and I felt the brew relied too much on hops. But then again, it is a wet hopped ale, so I wasn’t expecting a malty stout or anything. On a positive note, it was pretty refreshing but I just could not get past the overwhelming bitterness.

What Kevin Thinks:
Harvest Ale is a hoppy, citrusy, bright and fresh brew. The aromas and flavors are all there for those seeking a true “wet hop” experience. I particularly enjoyed the aroma which jumped from the glass and the crispness of the beer which allowed the hops and malts to integrate nicely on my tongue. The finish and after taste on this leave you wanting more.  If you are a fan of wet-hopped ales or nice crisp and partially dry pale ales this will be a treat. For me this is an 9/10.

ABV: 6.5%   IBU: 70   Color: Hazy Golden-Yellow   Year: 2012   Brewery: Founders Brewing Company

The Brewery Says:
This liquid dream pours a hazy golden straw color with a white, two-finger head. Your first sip rewards you with a super juicy hop presence bursting with fresh citrus, then finishes to introduce toasted malt undertones.
