We enjoyed Naragansett Summer Ale last year on the beach, but due to one too many seasonal craft cans we never got the review up. Since we are now in the warm pleasant month of May and it’s been hitting the shelves, now is a great time to revisit this one. Should you choose to empty this craft can into a glass, it pours with a bright straw yellow body that is crystal clear and has tons of active carbonation throughout. The head is a foamy brilliant white that eventually falls to a thin foam cap that leaves clumpy lacing up and down the sides of the glass. Definitely a nice, clean looking beer whose appearance indicates it is going to be light and refreshing. The aroma keeps on that theme as well, with slightly sweet and citrusy hops coming through over a malty background. The taste follows suit, with a light, well carbonated body carrying the mild, fruity hops. Easy drinking, both the malt and hop presence are not overwhelming, but the sip is still flavorful throughout.

What Alicia Thinks:
To me this seems like the craft beer equivalent of light beer, but I don’t mean that in an insulting way. As much as I love a good Russian Imperial Stout, every once in awhile I feel like drinking something else on the beach (insane, I know). This is refreshing, not overwhelming flavor-wise and actually tastes best quite cold, so no need to warm the can in your hands and be that guy at a 4th of July BBQ.

What Kevin Thinks:
Narragansett Summer ale is what it sets out to be, a refreshing and easy drinking brew. With a mild citrus hop character and slightly sweet notes in the aroma this isn’t a beer looking to blow you away. The light body makes this one for a sunny day marrying light handed citrus and sweetness with a mineral crisp touch. This seems like a gateway beer you could sneak past a BMC drinker to turn them on to the world of possibilities beer has to offer. While not a go to for me this would do in a pinch. For me overall Narragansett Summer Ale is a 6.5/10.

ABV: 4.2%   IBU: 24   Color: Pale Straw Yellow   Year: 2013   Brewery: Narragansett Brewing Company

The Brewery Says:
Roll out the Barrel: Our Summer Ale is an easy-drinking, session Blonde Ale that pays homage to ‘Gansett’s original Pale Ale.  Available on tap and in 16oz cans from May – August, the Summer Ale is too good to miss!

Quality Supreme: Narragansett Summer is a light session ale made with two row pale malt, citra, galaxy and chinook hops. The citra hops are a very popular, newer variety that deliver aromas of citrus and passion fruit without overpowering the taste buds.  The beer is blonde in color and the mild kiss of the hops complement the pale malt perfectly, making it extremely drinkable. The Summer Ale is craft brewed in small batches at North American Brewery in Rochester, NY under the supervision of the award winning brewmaster, Sean Larkin from Trinity Brewhouse and Revival Brewing. Winner of the Silver Medal in the 2011 World Beer Championships!
