2014: A Year of Beer in Review

2014: We got married, Kevin grew a mustache for a good cause and the New York Islanders are currently tied for first place in their division, so all in all it’s been a good year. As such we figured why not take a look at the year that has been pretty good to us and celebrate the Beer Loves Company moments we have enjoyed the most. Heading toward the end of 2014 there is much to remember and celebrate. We wish the same for you in 2015. Happy New Year!

In 2014 we brewed quite a few beers and even one called Saider that was a mash-up of a saison, cider and mead. This was also a year of cider brewing for us, once we discovered that you don’t have to stand in a freezing or sweltering garage, exposed to the elements, to produce this delicious beverage. Conveniently enough, cider can be “brewed” in the comfort of your home and though it seems simple there are many tweaks that can be made along the way to make the final product your own. We experimented with sour yeast, assorted fruits and our wedding toast was even made with a slightly sour raspberry cider (carbonated with maple syrup).  We’ll take that over champagne any day. Speigelau created their IPA glasses with a little help from their friends Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head and Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada, guys that know a thing or two about hops. The unique shape of the vessel, which kind of reminds us of a goblet perched atop a shot glass, is designed to showcase hop froward American style IPA’s by enhancing mouthfeel and preserving the head for longer than your average pour. Not to mention the wide opening that allows for that bitter, fruity aroma to really travel straight from the glass to your nose. The best part about these is that Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada are donating all their proceeds from sales of this glass to benefit advances in hop farming. 2014 American Homebrewers Association National Homebrewers Conference – Grand Rapids, Michigan

The 36th annual American Homebrewers Association National Homebrewers Conference (AHA NHC) was held June 12-14 in Grand Rapids, Michigan which is appropriately nicknamed Beer City USA. To be perfectly honest, when we were sitting at the 35th annual NHC last year in Philly and they announced this year the homebrewers would be “mashing in Michigan”, all we really knew to expect was Founders Brewing Company. We are currently attending the 36th annual American Homebrewers Association National Homebrewing Conference (or AHA NHC) in Grand Rapids Michigan. Between seminars on everything from ice cider to harvesting your own yeast, we have been able to get out and explore the city a bit. They’re not kidding when they say this is “Beer City USA”. Look for a full recap of the conference to come, but for now here is a brief look into our adventure so far.

The 35th Annual A.H.A. National Homebrewers Conference: The Aftermath

Last month (Saturday, June 29) the 35th annual A.H.A. National Homebrewers Conference wrapped up in Philadelphia. The commencement dinner banquet was preceded by three full days of seminars, events, tastings, meet & greets and vendor exhibits. Overall it was a hectic, information filled weekend that was hosted at the downtown Marriott but the festivities and craft beer enthusiasm quickly spilled out into much of the city of Philadelphia.

Our time in Philly actually kicked off on Wednesday morning, a full day before the conference began, when we arrived to take the tasting portion of the BJCP exam. After passing the online test the previous week, and practicing beer tasting for the better part of the last couple years, we arrived a bit anxious but ready to go. The exam was 90 minutes long and the largest BJCP tasting exam yet, with over 60 participants. Six beers were served and each exam taker had 15 minutes to judge each brew as if it was a BJCP sanctioned homebrew competition. Though the experience was a bit intimidating, and after comparing notes after it seems everyone had their own opinions on the beers, it was definitely a fitting way to kick off the weekend. Plus, we don’t find out our scores for at least a couple months so the outcome wasn’t able to negatively effect anyones conference experience. keep reading...
