Spent Grain Blueberry Walnut Muffins – Made with Siggi’s Yogurt

Once again we found ourselves with a lot of spent grain after a brew day and once again it seemed like a waste to throw it away. These muffins were totally improvised with ingredients we had around the house, but they turned out great. They are also very low in sugar and fat as far as muffins go (and just in general), so you can feel good about enjoying one with a homebrew or two.

  • 1 cup spent grain
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tbsp. light brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 8 oz. container Siggi’s strawberry yogurt (or other thick, Greek style yogurt)
  • 1/4 cup walnuts
  • 2 tbsp. butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon to taste

2014: A Year of Beer in Review

2014: We got married, Kevin grew a mustache for a good cause and the New York Islanders are currently tied for first place in their division, so all in all it’s been a good year. As such we figured why not take a look at the year that has been pretty good to us and celebrate the Beer Loves Company moments we have enjoyed the most. Heading toward the end of 2014 there is much to remember and celebrate. We wish the same for you in 2015. Happy New Year!

In 2014 we brewed quite a few beers and even one called Saider that was a mash-up of a saison, cider and mead. This was also a year of cider brewing for us, once we discovered that you don’t have to stand in a freezing or sweltering garage, exposed to the elements, to produce this delicious beverage. Conveniently enough, cider can be “brewed” in the comfort of your home and though it seems simple there are many tweaks that can be made along the way to make the final product your own. We experimented with sour yeast, assorted fruits and our wedding toast was even made with a slightly sour raspberry cider (carbonated with maple syrup).  We’ll take that over champagne any day. Or most days.

How to Make Spent Grain Oatmeal Raisin Cake-ies aka Soft & Delicious Cookies

What the heck is a Cake-is? Well, these cookies were born from the aftermath of the brew day for our White Stout MJ and Kevin’s hankering for a soft oatmeal raisin cookie. They are quick and easy to make, which is appealing after a long day of brewing, plus they came out pretty delicious. Also we made them with whole wheat flour, so you can feel a little healthy about washing these cookies down with a beer. We’re thinking the tagline will be, “Milk stout and spent grain cake-ies, the brewers midnight snack.” Enjoy!

Spent Grain Banana Pecan Bread

Did you ever wrap up a long, cold, tiring brew day and think, “You know what I really feel like doing right now? Baking.” Yeah, us either. Luckily we have found that spent grain keeps really well in a refrigerated Tupperware for a couple days so you can get your post-beer bake on at your leisure.

  • 3/4 cup wet Spent Grain
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 3 very-ripe bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup crushed pecans
  • 1 tsp. sugar free vanilla pumpkin spice

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Combine flour, salt, white sugar and baking powder in a mixing bowl.

3. Melt butter in the microwave for 30 seconds. Let cool slightly and add to dry ingredients
