Founders All Day IPA: Though this one comes in bottles and cans, our summer vote is for the canned version. Easy drinking but not light on flavor, All Day IPA delivers the perfect hop blast for a hot day. Also, it never hurts that you can get a 15 pack for around $20. keep reading...

Hops & Props at The Cradle of Aviation – February 8th 2014

Saturday, February 8, was the first ever Hops & Props Craft Beer Festival at the Cradle of Aviation. Though a similar event has been held at The Museum of Flight in Seattle for the past 12 years with great success, this was Long Island’s first introduction to the merging of craft beer and aviation. An unlikely match, sure, but they seemed to pair together almost flawlessly.

Since this was the first time this event was held, both the participants and attendees were not positive what to expect. We spoke to many brewers and exhibitors who told us when they arrived earlier in the day to set up they had no idea how the evening was going to pan out. Instead of having everything set up in a large, circular arena, which is how many craft beer festivals tend to operate, Hops & Props saw vendors sprawled throughout the museum in an almost maze-like set up. We admit that it took us quite a while to make our first pass through, though this was more due to lots of stopping and chatting rather than getting lost. The amount of aviation exhibits that were existing in harmony with the craft beer and food tables was really a sight to see, and to everyones credit it seems like the venue was treated with respect. keep reading...

Irelandia (Ireland + India) – Curried Cabbage & Pairings

Saint Patrick’s Day is almost upon us and here at BLC that means cooking up something delicious (and maybe wearing a little green as well). Since no doubt we will soon be hearing the (let’s be honest, sometimes blaring) tones of bagpipes in the air it seemed like we should prepare something to honor this holiday from the Emerald Isle. It seems no Irish inspired meal is complete without cabbage, so in addition to our Blind Bat Stout Stew, we also cooked up a curried cabbage side dish. You may be asking, “Is this another recipe with a twist?” Yes, yes we did decide to add a twist to our cabbage. While we think corned beef and cabbage is a fine choice for your St. Pat’s celebration we wanted to try two recipes that were a bit different and offered some more depth of flavor to pair with the beers we would be enjoying. This side dish was savored with our stout stew, but it would make a suitable side dish for just about any St. Patty’s Day meal. This could also be turned into a hearty main course on its own by adding meat or tofu in the mix. This dish is savory, a little spicy and was quite tasty. keep reading...

From Ireland to Long Island – Blind Bat Stout Stew & Pairings

Saint Patrick’s Day is right around the corner (it’s tomorrow for those who may not know). With that in mind we here at BLC were thinking how best to celebrate the festivities. During our recent interview with The Beer Amigos (Episode 12 is the one with our interview as well as more from the recent Spring Craft Beer Fest) we talked a bit about writing recipes and developing pairings for beer and food. This crept into our minds while running a couple errands and we decided to celebrate by making a “Guinness Stew”. We changed around the ingredients and recipe to make it our own. Instead of the traditional Irish dry stout, we decided to go with local favorite and use Blind Bat Brewery’s Long Island Potato Stout. After all, what says St. Patrick’s Day more than beer and potatoes? keep reading...
