How to Simply Make a Cider: Our (Very) Basic Guide to Homebrewing a Gluten Free Hard Apple Cider

At several recent craft beer themed events we have served homebrewed hard cider. It’s a drink that is easy to make and quite delicious. Many people have come up to us and asked,”Just how do I make a cider?” as they envision making some for their cider loving or gluten-free girlfriend/son/friend. Well, the honest truth is that a basic cider is much less complicated to make than beer or wine and requires far less equipment. All you need is regular apple juice/cider (preferably locally obtained), a vessel for fermentation like a glass carboy or a food safe bucket, an airlock, a bung, a little sanitizer and some nice healthy yeast. Brewing a Local Gluten Free Cider w/ Bourbon Oak Chips

20140414-094159.jpgFor this year’s 10th Anniversary Blue Point Brewery Cask Ale Festival Alicia suggested we brew a cider. We have crafted several ciders (succesfully) for many events held across Long Island over the last few years so this was an easy decision to make. The 10th Anniversary of the Blue Point Brewery Cask Festival would mark the first time, ever, Beer Loves Company would make a cider and cask condition it.

To create our product we decided to go with unpasteurized apple cider from local Richter’s Orchards in Northport, NY. At first we were a bit hesitant to use cider in this state but after talking with the people at Richter’s we thought, what the hell. Our goal with this cider was to try and make something we would enjoy. We weren’t thinking about anyone else’s palates but ours when putting ideas together. So if the people who essentially live apples suggest unpasteurized cider (which they said would give us a truer apple taste) then that was good enough for us. keep reading...

At it’s core (ouch!) Cider is a beverage made from apple juice and yeast. It is a beverage that is gaining in popularity with numerous varieties springing up in numerous styles and flavors. With the weather changing and becoming colder as the fall season stretches on, we wanted a richer fuller cider and J.K.’s Cuvée Winterruption Farmhouse Hard Cider was the one we chose.

This cider, with a mouthful of a name, comes from the great and chilly state of Michigan. Almar Orchards has a long and storied tradition of growing apples and producing cider. Currently the fourth and the fifth-generations of Koan’s own and operate the produce, grain and livestock which sprawls on for 500 acres featuring organic meadows and pastures. Woodside Orchards Brings Hard Apple Cider to Aquebogue, Long Island

Woodside Orchards has been a Long Island apple staple since 1982, with orchards in both Jamesport and Aquebogue. They offer fresh baked pies, apple butter, donuts and U-pick, as well as ready to go bags of the over 20 varieties of apples they grow.

However, the Aquebogue location has recently added another apple based delight to entice people to their roadside farmhouse: hard cider. Though they have produced delicious apple cider for quite some time, this season marks the first that they have added an alcoholic twist. With the use of onsite fermenters, they produce all the cider within a few feet of where it is served. keep reading...

Brewing up a Cider – Apple of my Chai

Apple of my Chai is the name of a cider we brewed to pour at the Brewer’s East End Revival (B.E.E.R.) homebrew club table during the inaugural edition of Great South Bay Brewing Company’s Punktoberfest. This event is GSB’s celebration of all things fall, Oktoberfest and Punk Rock. The edict for bringing a beer to pour at P-Fest was that it needed to be “fall themed”. This of course opened the flood gates for pumpkin and Oktoberfest style beers. While we are fans of those categories of beer we thought bringing a cider would be a change of pace for us and the patrons who would come and try a pour (or two). keep reading...
