It’s (Halfway to) the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Today is June 25th 2014. That means we are only six months away from what is the best day of the year, Christmas. Whether you celebrate the holiday or not, it’s hard to argue the true meaning that has developed around the holiday: caring for family and friends. Definitely something we can all get behind. Well, all the caring and of course the cookies, presents, movies, memories and drinks at least, no? Here at BLC we fully embrace the holiday (to the max) and have decided to unleash a fraction of the holiday spirit jammed within our very souls onto the internet today. You are all welcome. keep reading...

Sea Hag IPA (craft can) – New England Brewing Company (2014)

20140616-103530.jpgBLC Says:
“The Sea Hag” refers to an old New England legend that the deceased wife of a Don Draper of the sea (aka a bit of a cheater) still haunts the New Haven harbor. If you want to really read some insane stuff, check out how to ward her off. Ironically enough, one tip is to avoid drinking because just the smell of beer will attract the hag and make her pretty damn angry.

On that bizarre note, New England Brewing Company has been canning their Sea Hag IPA since 2006, back in the day of few craft cans. For the sake of the review, we did pour one of the six into a glass and it’s a fairly clear golden color with a bright white head and foamy lacing. Sweet hops immediately hit your nose, with lots of citrus, pine and sugar present. The malt does provide a bit of balance and makes itself known, but the aroma is really a showcase for the hops. Same can be said of the taste, though again the candied malt comes through with a bit of a sweet cracker-like quality to it. Candied citrus peel, mostly orange, is present with herbs, pine and event a hint of wood. A tiny bit of alcohol comes through in the finish, but it mostly ends on a bitter, dry note that coats the entire palate. keep reading...

Hopslam Ale – Bell’s Brewery Inc. (2014)

BLC Says:
Bell’s Hopslam pours a clear light amber color with orange hues and a bright white fluffy head sitting atop it all. Carbonation is very visible in the body and the foam leaves behind lots of sticky lacing. The aroma is a mix between fruit and hops, though it does change as the beer sits a bit. Initially there are lots of candied citrus notes with earthy, pungent hops in the background. As Hopslam warms, the aroma peaks with a heavy melon presence but then the fruit and hops begin to fade and alcohol becomes predominant. Bottom line, this is not a beer you let warm up a bit before enjoying. Upon taking a sip, you are immediately hit with tons of prickly carbonation and a sticky, sweet body with well mingled alcohol undertones. There is a bit of a candied, syrup like quality that makes way for a bitter, earthy finish. Though citrus is more prevalent in the aroma than the flavor, orange notes really come out in the aftertaste. Again, as it warms the alcohol begins to overpower the other elements. keep reading...

All Day IPA – Founders Brewing Company (2013)

BLC Says:
Founders All Day IPA is sub-labeled “Session Ale”, making this their take on that rapidly growing section of the beer market. A “session ale” essentially means is a beer you can drink during a period of time (or session) without becoming overwhelmed by its alcohol content. These session beers can be consumed in reasonable quantity but should have full depth of flavor. Basically a brew in this style could take the place of a “light” beer (having a similar alcohol by volume or ABV) while providing a world of flavor not found in the world of Macro “light” beer. To learn more about session beer head over to the aptly named, Session Beer Project by Lew Bryson. keep reading...
