Win a Keg of Blue Point Brewing Company Beer of Your Choice While Supporting Long Island Cares!

Thanks to Kevin’s team leading Movember fundraising efforts we were awarded a 1/2 barrel keg of Blue Point Brewing Company beer. Pretty good right? Grow a moustache, raise some money and win beer. Well as much as we enjoy BPBC beer and wouldn’t mind having it on tap at here at home, we have decided to keep up the charitable theme and raffle off the keg.

The raffle will take place at the Long Island Beer and Malt Enthusiast (LIBME) meeting this Wednesday, January 8 at Bobbique in Patchogue. Tickets will be 1 for $12 or 2 for $20, with all proceeds going to Long Island Cares. The winner will receive a certificate which they can turn in at Blue Point Brewing Company to receive a keg of their choice based on current availability.

Crafting a Beer: Execution – Fünke a Mint Blueberry Kölsch (2013)

About a week after our careful recipe planning (which you should read about by clicking here), it was time to brew our Fünke a Mint Blueberry Kölsch. Well, technically we would just be brewing a kölsch base beer at this point. Quickly, for those who do not know, a kölsch is a traditional style of German beer originating in Cologne. It is brewed with an ale yeast but is lagered for a time linking it with some other central Northern European beers such as altbier. Our mint and blueberry additions won’t be mixed with the beer until it is time to put the brew into the cask. The kölsch recipe we came up with was a hybrid culled from various influences one being Brewing Classic Styles (which is a book all aspiring home brewers should pick up). With this beer we would have one foot (ok, maybe a few toes) in tradition and the other deeply in experimentation, new ideas and thirsty optimism. Using Brewing Classic Styles and it’s theories on brewing a kölsch as well as Bobby’s vast experience in brewing to style we would have a solid foundation upon which to paint with our flavor palette.

BLC Says:
Surge Protector Sandy Relief Ale is, as you may have guessed, an ale that was brewed to help support victims of Hurricane Sandy. Among the thousands who faced damages from Sandy were Long Islands Barrier Brewing Company in Oceanside, who had the majority of their brewing equipment destroyed by flooding. The proceeds from this beer support Barrier’s rebuild as well as Long Island Cares, a local charity that has been active in the community for over 30 years. In addition to benefitting from this brew in recent years Long Island Cares has also partnered with Blue Point Brewery to collect donations during their annual Cask Fest (if you are attending this Saturday, bring something to support Long Islanders in need).
