After a slightly long hiatus from pumpkin season – one that was filled with Oktoberfest, cooking and a bit of Mother Nature being a mother, well, you know – we are back in the swing of all things spiced. Having already reviewed four brews of the pumpkin variety (Brooklyn Post Road PumpkinSam Adams Harvest PumpkinFire Island Pumpkin Barrel and Southampton Pumpkin Ale), we have been busy trying many more, both on draught and bottled, and will have our thoughts on them rolling out from now through Thanksgiving. keep reading...

Samuel Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale – Boston Beer Company (2012)

Samuel Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale is one of several fall offerings available from the Boston Beer Company. Their pumpkin ale pours a dark ruby color with a tan head that subsides rather quickly. Upon first smelling it, you are hit with vegetal almost herbaceous qualities. These notes are backed up by hints of caramel and malt that come together in a fashion that is quite similar to the smell of candy corn. Once the beer hits your tongue, rich caramel and malt flavors are the first things you taste. There are slight touches of spice around its edges with very subtle background notes of chocolate. Medium carbonation is present throughout the beer. This pumpkin ale has a cider like flavor to it as well, which becomes apparent in the slightly sour, spiced aftertaste. keep reading...
