3Beans – Sixpoint Brewery (2013)

Sixpoint Brewery recently released 3Beans. This beer is a coming together (as one may have guessed) of beans and brewing. The “masterminds” behind this limited release collaboration were all brought together by their love of the bean. As Shane Welch co-founder of Sixpoint Brewery says in their promotional video for the brew, “It has everything necessary for life encapsulated in a shell”. The idea is based upon an ancient formulation via Medieval Europe coming out of the Slavic areas and the Baltic areas where due to the climate ancient brewers did not have access to regular brewing grains like barley and wheat. These brewers would look for fermentable sugars elsewhere and one of those sources was beans.

Beer Pairings – Dubliner Irish Cheddar with Stout & Fourme d’Ambert (aged over 60 days) paired with Blind Bat Brewery Long Island Potato Stout & Sixpoint Brewery 3Beans

As you may have recently read, we here at Beer Loves Company cooked up a meal (detailing the experience and providing the recipe) here on our website. With only one cup (8 oz.) of beer required to make our stout stew and our chosen beer, Blind Bat Brewery Long Island Potato Stout, coming in 16.9 oz. bottles we had some left over. What better way to enjoy these “leftovers” than with some tasty cheese? Since the our stew, while not a difficult recipe, does take some time to cook you’ll definitely want to enjoy a snack and a beer while it simmers away. In the spirit of St. Patricks Day week, we selected a Dubliner Irish Cheddar made with Irish Stout and also a Fourme d’Ambert (aged over 60 days) to pair with the beers we would be pouring. Speaking of those beers, in addition to the Blind Bat Stout we also opened a can of the limited release 3Beans by Sixpoint Brewery which was a collaborative effort between Sixpoint, Stumptown Coffee Roasters & Mast Brothers Chocolate. We wanted to see how these beers from, “the Dark Side“, would taste with our two cheeses.

Point of Origin Cheese – Sixpoint Brewery & Sprout Creek Farm (2012)

Today we are going to switch it up a bit and review a cheese called Point of Origin. But this isn’t just any cheese, it is a collaboration between Sixpoint Brewery from Brooklyn, NY and Spout Creek Farm from Poughkeepsie, NY. This raw cow milk cheese is being produced exclusively for Whole Foods in the Northeast. This cheese is aged in Sixpoint Diesel, a black IPA/stout combo, for 60 days. This process generally produces a more pungent rind and is fairly common in cheese making, though it usually uses brine as the liquid. The cheese has a cost of $24.99/pound, but you can get an entire round for under $15.00 as this is not a very heavy product.
