BLC Says
Oskar Blues Ten FIDY Imperial Stout is big beer and we had the pleasure of enjoying it on tap. The version we sampled was aged over a year originally being kegged in 2011. The brew pours a thick, dark black with a creamy saddle color head that sticks around even after you start sipping. The aroma is dominated by alcohol and chocolate, with hints of vanilla and coffee coming though. Subtle cherry and maple are also present and there is a brightness that has notes of fresh cream to round out the scent. For a strong beer in both smell and appearance, the taste is restrained and well balanced. Ten FIDY is medium bodied i and the mouthfeel is smooth, with several flavors working in harmony. Up front, there are coffee and roasted notes with subtle hints of vanilla. This gives way to a sweeter maple flavor and the sip ends on a semi-dry, bitter note. Alcohol is present in the taste but it is not overwhelming. Aging this brew for a year seems to have tamed the alcohol a bit and also subdued so of the 98 IBUs. This is another beer that would be great around a fire with a few close friends.

What Alicia Thinks:
I really enjoyed this stout and thought it was a great mix of sweetness and bitter, roasted flavors. For 10% alcohol it was not as strong tasting as you’d expect, but for me the flavor was still powerful so I doubt I could drink several of these. Well, I probably could because it was pretty delicious but I doubt I’d be able to function too well. I’d say this is something you should check out if you get the opportunity. I am curious to see what differences, if any, there are between this and a 2012 version so I’ll probably be picking up a can soon.

What Kevin Thinks:
I very much enjoy Ten FIDY imperial stout. I think aging this beer in the keg may have done some good for it but unlike a few recent beers we have tried it did not make a world of difference. That being said it was nice to find it on tap and for the effort of aging it to be put in. I really like how the flavors and aromas all interweave in this beer. The vanilla, chocolate, coffee, maple, touches of cream and slight almond notes are delightful. The smooth and softness of this beer never became overly thick or coating. Oskar Blues again has brewed another great beer here. This is a good winter drinker. For me this is an 8.5/10.

ABV: 10.5% IBU: 98 Color: Dark Black Year: 2010 Brewery: Oskar Blues Grill & Brewery

The Brewery Says:
Ten FIDY Imperial Stout – This titanic, immensely viscous stout is loaded with inimitable flavors of chocolate-covered caramel and coffee and hide a hefty 98 IBUs underneath the smooth blanket of malt. Ten FIDY (10.5% ABV) is made with enormous amounts of two-row malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, flaked oats and hops. Ten FIDY is the ultimate celebration of dark malts and boundary-stretching beer.
