The Perfect Crime – Evil Twin Brewing/Stillwater Artisanal Ales/Stone Brewing Co. (2012)

The Perfect Crime is a collaboration brew between Evil Twin Brewing, Stillwater Artisinal Ales & Stone Brewing Co. Having brewed a stout/saison hybrid ourselves a few months back, and participating in a collaboration of our own yesterday which unexpectedly evolved into brewing a dark saison, we figured this was a perfect time to break out The Perfect Crime (slow clap…).

Though this beer was released in November of 2012, we didn’t crack it open until recently so the bottle had almost a year and a half of age to it. It pours with a clear, dark body that had deep ruby and garnet highlights throughout when held to the light. The small, cream colored head is thin but the lacing stays up even as the beer sits. The aroma is a bit on the funky side, with several components coming from the glass at once. Up front, it is heavy on the licorice/anise which then gives way to Belgian, yeast heavy spiced notes. The yeast is very prevalent and has a creamy, yogurt like scent. On top of everything else there is subtle chocolate, coffee and smoke throughout.

What Alicia Thinks:
This is a unique beer on several fronts. The black smoked saison genre is typically not one you find packing out the shelves and the fact that three breweries are represented in this 12 oz. bottle makes for a wild beer. This was a fun beer to sample and compare to our own homebrewing efforts, though it was a bit on the disjointed side. I would be curious to see how this tasted fresh. Sadly, we have not yet built a beer time machine so this aged version was all we had to go by. I enjoy all these breweries separately and it was nice to see them come together and produce something totally out of the ordinary.

What Kevin Thinks:
Though this was a black saison, in both name and appearance, the smoked bitter flavors came through way more than anything from a darker, roasted malt. I also would have liked to try this fresh because if I had to guess I’d say some of the flavors may have become a bit muddled with age. I am curious to know what each brewery contributed to the beer, though I have my own hypothesis. For me it doesn’t totally line up and you can taste a bit of a disconnect throughout, but all the flavors come together to make something interesting and worth trying. This beer is now back on the market, so you may be able to find a bottle at your local shop and let us know what you think.

The Brewery Says: Evil Twin / Stillwater / Stone “The Perfect Crime” Black Smoked Saison. In a masterfully orchestrated collaboration of the minds, Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø of Denmark’s Evil Twin Brewing, Brian Strumke from Baltimore’s Stillwater Artisanal Ales, and Stone brewmaster Mitch Steele crafted a beer that cleverly exploits the definition of a saison.
